The flower shape determines which flowers an insect finds attractive. For example, butterflies have a long, rolling tongue, which allows them to get nectar from flowers. Bees and bumblebees, with their shorter tongue are unable to get the nectar from the same types of flowers.
Bees and bumblebees are especially attracted to white, yellow and blue flowers. Butterflies prefer purple. Stripes and dots on the flowers act as additional signposts to the nectar.
